I am a senior Occupational Therapist, who qualified from the University of Ulster at Jordanstown in 1999. I have over 16 years of experience working directly with children.
A child’s occupation is to play and learn and in the case of children’s Occupational Therapy, the word "occupation" refers to play, self-care, school-work, and any other activities that occupy the child’s day.
As a Paediatric OT, I aim to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for children who are having difficulty with their everyday tasks/ occupations to help them to thrive at home, at school, and within their community. More
The service has been developed by Colette O’Hanlon, a senior Occupational Therapist, with over 16 years’ experience working specifically with children.
Paediatric Occupational Therapy aims to help a child to reach and maintain their optimal level of independence in everyday tasks and to meet their potential at home and at school.
No, just get in touch and we can discuss your concerns, if I think I can help with I will be happy to arrange an appointment.
I have a private clinic in Tullamore, but pre-school/school visits may be available at the request of parents or services (distance dependent).
Therapy sessions last 60 minutes, typically 45 – 50 minutes of direct therapy, with an additional 10-15 minutes feedback/planning for home programme at the end.
All therapy sessions are needs based and individualised, some children will not require any direct therapy sessions, whilst some may benefit from a number of sessions. Sessions can be spread out over a number of weeks or may be intermittent (weekly/fortnightly/monthly) depending on the nature of your child’s difficulty and the level of your concern. We can discuss this and agree a plan, if therapy is indicated after assessment.
If your child is currently receiving Occupational Therapy input from other services, private therapy will not be necessary. Having 2 Occupational Therapists working with your child at the same time, will not double the chances of therapy being effective and could actually have a negative impact. It can be useful to have a break directly after a block of therapy to allow for consolidation of the skills that the therapist and your child has been working on. It is essential that you provide details of any recent O.T assessments prior to receiving a new O.T assessment as many assessments have a re-test time and any assessments repeated within the re-test time would not produce a valid or reliable score.
